VICE Japan has released a great video showcasing a day in the life of Japanese kaiju toy maker Mori Katsura of RealxHead. This is a fantastic look behind the scenes of one of the most iconic modern Japanese sofubi toy companies. The video is entirely in Japanese, but the craft is universal.
The designer toy movement has inventively made it's way to the "sofubi" scene, an abbreviation for "soft vinyl" in Japanese. For more than 10 years, Mori Katsura of Realxhead has been creating original action figures using his 60 year-old process, which includes Mori's secret weapon, a 70 year-old master painter named Goto. Vice follows Mori, an innovator in the indie soft vinyl scene where he collaborates with Goto to produce new toys.
