Obey Giant's Shepard Fairey has created a new print as a tribute to Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, with 100 of them being available at the opening of Weiwei's upcoming exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The portrait is in Fairey’s signature style, and features a gash on the Weiwei’s scalp as reference to his altercation with Chinese police in 2010. As a result of that incident, Weiwei’s passport was confiscated and he has been unable to travel, including to show openings like the upcoming one in New York.
Fairey worked with Pace Prints to produce this print in collaboration with Friends of Ai Weiwei. Funds from the sale will be used to promote awareness of the artist’s legal status, as well as support the promotion of free speech and other artistic initiatives. Produced in a run of 350, the museum will be selling 100 of these in association with the exhibition.
